Zim cricketers fined for slow play

HARARE - Bangladesh beat Zimbabwe by one wicket to wrap-up a 3-1 win in the Croco Motors One-Day International series at Harare Sports Club on Saturday. Bangladesh have now won their first-ever series in Zimbabwe since first touring the country in 2001. To add insult to injury, the Zimbabwean player

s were fined by the ICC for slow play.
Zimbabwe could have won; Bangladesh, who had looked comfortable chasing Zimbabwe’s total of 244 runs for eight wickets, lost late wickets and, at the final stage, needed only three runs to win off 17 balls, but with only one wicket in hand. Abdur Razzak was cool enough to hit a boundary, over long-off, to seal a historic win.
After the game, Zimbabwe team captain Prosper Utseya was fined 40% of his match fee for his side’s slow over rate.
The ICC said Utseya had breached Level 2.11 of the Code. According to James Fitzgerald, ICC communications officer, the match was found to have been four overs short. The verdict was issued following a hearing conducted by match referee Cyril Mitchley. “Slow over rates are not fair to the opposition or the spectators and captains have a responsibility to ensure their players adhere to the regulations in that regard,” said Mitchley. The team’s players were each fined 20% of their match fees for the same offence. The charge was brought by match umpires Kevan Barbour and Amish Saheba.
