Benjani aims higher

PORTSMOUTH - Striker and Zimbabwe national soccer team captain Benjani Mwaruwari is hoping to rekindle his goal-scoring flame and help fire struggling Portsmouth into Europe.
Benjani, who has set himself a target of 15 goals this season, has failed to score since New Year's Day and his record sin

ce moving from Fratton Park is just five goals from 39 Premiership games.
He has been out of the Portsmouth line-up for a while now, including the weekend’s 4-0 defeat at Blackburn.
However, the Zimbabwean international is keen to address his goal-shy run in what remains of the Premiership season.
‘Pompey’ (as Portsmouth is known) are just below a European position in the English Premiership after the weekend matches but Benjani is hopeful that Harry Redknapp can lead his side to a European finish.
“I played for three seasons in the Uefa Cup with Auxerre, plus once in the Champions League, and they are always big occasions,” Benjani told Sky sport.
“It would be great if we can make Europe and create that kind of atmosphere with Portsmouth.
“Normally, as a striker, you need to score goals but my game is more than that. I like to run and make space for other people.
“Sometimes I have been unlucky not scoring, and sometimes it has been because we have not had the creativity.
“I want to score more, of course, and hope I get the chances, but Kanu has been very, very important.”
Meanwhile, Mwaruwari has pleaded with Nwanko Kanu to sign a new deal at Fratton Park. Nigerian star Kanu has had a huge impact at Pompey since signing on a free transfer in August last year.
His future is up in the air, though, as Ajax and PSV Eindhoven are both keen on the 30-year-old, but Benjani is hopeful his team-mate will pledge his future to Portsmouth.
“It is very important Kanu stays at Portsmouth,” said Benjani. “He is one of those guys who can both create and score goals. He is very experienced and has helped me a lot.
“When Kanu came from West Brom everybody doubted him but he has a new home here. We all want him to stay and all the guys have pleaded with him to sign his contract.”
Kanu has scored 10 goals for Portsmouth this season.
