SLOPPY defending an lack of urgency was the mighty warriors’ worst enemy when they were beaten 3-2 by South Africa’s Banyanya Banyana on Saturday.
The mighty warriors will join million of other viewers ofor the Olymbic games in Beijing next year as they will not be part of the party.
The Mighty Warriors needed to win by a 1-0 margin to book a place in the round-robin stage of the qualifiers.
Everything seem to be going well for them until the introduction of Banyanya Banyana’s Portia Modise in the second half.
The Sweden-based player had a terrific game and proved to be the trumpcard for the South Africans and gave the Zimbabweans a tough time.
After her introduction Zimbabwe’s defense lacked stability and the vision in midfield disappeared as they failed to maintain the rhythm they had found in the first half.
Zimbabwe took the lead in the 23rd minute through hardworking striker Marylin Magozore, who played well throughout the game.
Their equaliser, however, came in the 51st minute from Veronica Phewa, much to everyone’s surprise because most people only realised that the ball had crossed the line after it had touched the ground.
Zimbabwe’s captain Nomsa Moyo scored Zimbabwe’s second goal in the 68th minute.
South Africa’s second goal came in the 75th minute.
Hlengiwe Ngwane took a free kick from just outside the penalty box, which curled straight into the net, beating Chingao hands down.
They sealed the game in the 89th minute when Belinda Nkosi flicked home a through pass from Kheneliwe Mathibela.
