Team Zim trawls Diaspora

HARARE - A number of foreign-based athletes are likely not to represent Zimbabwe in the All Africa Games, as the Games medal have no monetary value, compared to the Olympic Games medal.
Custom Kachambwa, the Team Zimbabwe Games general manager, said the All Africa Games were all about national pr

ide, rather than monetary returns. He said that it was not mandatory for the foreign-based athletes to participate at the Games, being held from 11-23 July in Algiers, Algeria.
The Zimbabwe All Africa games team will get a daily allowance of US$20 per athlete. The athletes are also entitled to cash incentives for scooping medals. Gold medallists will pocket $5 million, silver medallists $3 million and bronze medallists will walk away with $2 million, which is expected to be heavily eroded by inflation by the end of the games. Zimbabwe’s foreign-based athletes are medal prospects. Tennis boasts Fadzai Masiyazi and Fadzai Mawisire, who are based in the United States.
Athletics has the highest number of participants based abroad. They are Tabitha Tsatsa, Brian Dzingai, Lewis Banda and Gabriel Mvumvure.
Chess’s Farai Mandizha is also based in the United States and the Games team is trying to persuade him to come for the Games.
Swimming’s Kirsty Coventry and Heather Brand are on scholarships in the United States.
Kim Eeson is based at the Pretoria High Performance Centre in South Africa. Another swimmer, Grant Beahan, has also secured a scholarship to study in the United States and is likely not be available for the continental games.
Kachambwa said Team Zimbabwe had submitted a budget of $4,5 billion to treasury to go towards pre-Games camping, buying kit for the team, travel expenses and allowances for the athletes. A lean squad of 91 athletes would go to Algeria, compared to the 120 that represented Zimbabwe in 2003 in Nigeria, due to foreign currency constraints. – CAJ News
