One of Vermeulen’s bail conditions was that he is prevented from visiting the venue of the arson attack, namely the Harare Sports Club. Vermeulen was spotted at HSC on the first day of the four-day match involving the visiting Sri Lankan A side. Vermeulen according to reports was seen milling around the nets with a few children.
In defending Vermeulen’s actions, his attorney, Eric Matinenga asked to have his client’s bail restrictions lifted entirely. The application will be heard following consultations with a forensic psychologist, Dr A Rajkovic, who is now overseeing Vermeulen. The case was adjourned to November 12. Â
At the match, Chamu Chibhabha’s century earned Zimbabwe Select a well-deserved draw as they finished on 221 for 3, chasing a target of 317 in their four-day match against Sri Lanka A. Chibhabha, whose previous highest first class score was the 98 he scored against the South African Academy in August, defied the Sri Lankan bowling for more than three hours hitting ten fours and two sixes as he led a much improved batting performance from the Zimbabweans to draw against a decent Sri Lankan bowling attack. Brief scores: Sri Lanka A 426 and 206 for 5 dec (Kapugedera 58*, Warnapura 55) drew with Zimbabwe Select 313 and 221 for 3 (Chibhabha 103). At the time of going to print Zimbabwe Select were playing the second 4 day match at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, it finishes today.
This week, Zimbabwe Select take on the Sri Lankans in 3 one day fixtures the first two are to be played in Bulawayo at Queens Sport Club on Oct 28 and 29 with the last game on November 1st at the Harare Sports Club.
