Former Zimbabwe left-arm spinner, Ray Price, who was one of Heath Streak’s striking rebels in 2004, is to return to the Zimbabwe fold after being handed a call-up to the national squad for Zimbabwe’s upcoming series against the West Indies later this month. Price returned to the country from England two weeks ago after rejecting a new contract with the English county Worcestershire where he spent four seasons.
In 2004, he was one of the 15 players who went on strike to oppose the regime running Zimbabwe Cricket.
Despite his much-publicised wish to one-day play for England – of which he is three years into a four-year qualifying period – Price is rejoining the country of his birth. He is understood to have been given a ZC contract after consulting previous ex-senior Zimbabwe players like Heath Streak and Trevor Gripper.
It has to be said, Price always kept the door open on a Zimbabwe comeback after turning out for Old Hararians in the national league semi-finals earlier this year. Price’s return will come as a major boost for the national side, however; one wonders where he will fit in as captain. Prosper Utseya already fills the spinner’s role, but Price will offer different options to coach Robin Brown’s plans.
