Heads to roll at Highlanders AGM

BULAWAYO - Heads are set to roll at the forthcoming Highlanders Football Club Annual General Meeting (AGM), with the club's card-carrying members baying for the blood of some members of the technical department.

Devastated by their club’s embarrassing 1-2 CBZ Cup final defeat to perennial rivals Dynamos at their home ground – Barbourfields Stadium, and the Bulawayo giants’ easy surrender of the League championship to Dynamos a week later, Bosso supporters are calling for the head of coach Methembe Ndlovu and Manager Emmett Ndlovu, whom they hold responsible.

Ndlovu, who ironically won the club its first championship in four years in 2006, stands accused by the fans of being very stubborn and refusing to listen to his assistants.

The fans believe that Ndlovu gift-wrapped the championship and single-handedly handed it to Dembare by sticking to his unorthodox 4-1-4-1 formation, despite lacking the players who could gel in that formation.

“Methembe must just go. He is not the right material for a big club like Bosso.  We want someone who will take us to the summit of the league, where we belong. Emmett also believes that he is Highlanders and instead of safeguarding the players’ welfare, he is fighting them and team morale is now very low. The boys are now not willing to play the game because of him,” said Muziwethu Moyo of Gwabalanda.

His club’s 0-1 loss to Monomotapa diminished Bosso’s chances of retaining the championship on the suspension of some players, notably hardworking midfielder, Richard Choruma, on reasons of indiscipline.

Choruma, a very loyal Highlanders son, is said to have been unfairly singled out by the manager for leading a near-revolt by Bosso players over unpaid allowances.

Supporters accused Methembe of favouring under-achieving players.

Ndlovu preferred to play the club’s best striker, Obadiah Tarumbwa, on the left side of midfield, in what supporters say was meant to frustrate crowd favourite, Johannes Ngodzo, who had to sit on the bench despite being arguably the best creative midfielder in the league.

Ndlovu also played Choruma as a defensive midfielder, resulting in the team having three defensive linkmen, with the others being Mkhuphali Masuku and Eric Mudzingwa, while the club lacked firepower upfront, where Choruma could come in handy.

Bosso chairman, Ernest Sibanda, confirmed that the club’s AGM promises to be a stormy one. “A re-shuffle is definitely going to happen but that is what I can tell you for now. Come and see for yourself,” he said. The Bosso AGM is usually held in January.
