Gwekwerere under pressure

JOHANNESBURG - Off-form Zimbabwe striker Evans Gwekwerere has to do something extra special when the South African premiership resumes next month to win back the faith of hard-to-please Moroka Swallows fans as well as live up to the pomp and fanfare that greeted his entry into the local league.

The former Dynamos marksman is yet to find the net 15 games into the season raising doubts that he is worthy of donning the famous maroon-and-white of the Dube Birds.
With Earthquake, as Gwekwerere is known back home, it has been left to the freescoring pair of Zambian hotshot James Chamanga and Sandile Ndlovu to propel Swallows to the upper echelons of the ABSA Premiership.
The gap-toothed striker has the backing of his coach and countryman, Ian Gorowa, who is confident that Gwekwerere will return from the two-month break a rejuvenated player and break his goalscoring drought when the league resumes after this month’s African Nations Cup.
The Birds mentor attributes Gwekwerere’s goal duck to a hamstring injury that his marksman sustained earlier this season, which is now healed.
“Evans has not been scoring because he has not had significant game time. You have to play in order to score,” he said.
Following his recovery from injury, the Zimbabwe international has had to play second fiddle to the marauding pair of the league’s top-scorer Chamanga and strike partner ‘AK 47’ Ndlovu. – CAJ News
