Women cricketers for World Cup qualifiers

THE Zimbabwe national women's cricket team is set to intensify preparations for the 2009 International Cricket Council World Cup qualifiers with a 21-day training camp starting this week.

National team manager, Chiedza Mafunga, told The Zimbabwean “the team will begin their training camp in Msasa on January 25.”

The qualifiers will take place in Stellenbosch, South Africa from February 18- 24 with the global showpiece set for Australia, next year.

The six-day tournament will feature eight nations, which will compete for the available two slots to the World Cup.

Zimbabwe women are in Pool B together with Ireland, Scotland and Pakistan where they hope to emerge one of the top two teams to the semi-finals. Pool A feature the hosts, Netherlands, Bermuda and Papua New Guinea.

The national team will face Scotland in the first match of their World Cup campaign before playing Ireland, the following day, at Van der Stel Cricket Club and Stellenbosch University, respectively.

According to the ICC world rankings, South Africa, Ireland, Netherlands and Pakistan appear favorites, with Zimbabwe women determined to prove a force to reckon with in their international debut. – Gracey Chirumanzu
