Preparations well underway for the World Junior Championships

Jeffreys Choga

Zimbabwe youth sprinter Jeffreys Choga from Prince Edward High School stormed his way one position shy of the Bronze medal in Pretoria this weekend in a very heated field of sprinters from 10 regional countries including South Africa and Zambia.

Though Choga was disappointed with his finishing 4th in the 100 m Coach Munya Maraire stated, It is such a blessing, because we are still in the speed endurance phase of his training and I am very surprised he has already qualified for the World Junior Championships. We were going to hit the time at the Southern Regional Junior Championship competition which is being hosted next month in Zimbabwe. Choga posted a 10.73s mark in the race which qualifies him for Poland later in the year. Another brilliant performance came from Michael Chiduku from St Johns College who finished 6th place in the regional 400 m. Both sprinters are products of the WWS Academy sports development programme aimed at preparing Junior Athletes for educational scholarships abroad and locally.

It was a field day for NAAZ President Joseph Mungwari who traveled with the team for a heated Presidents meeting which ended with Zimbabwe grasping one of the biggest competitions on the African continent this year, the Southern Region Junior Championships. 12 countries have confirmed their attendance.
The competition itself has landed a full sponsorship deal from World Wide Scholarships, the official sponsor of Zimbabwe Athletics and will include scouts from the USA attending the showcase in an effort to open Scholarship opportunities to the USA to our regional youths too with Zimbabwe being the platform. The competition kicks off on June 7 at the University of Zimbabwe.
