Moyo wins gold in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG

Zimbabwean veteran long distance running sensation Samukeliso Moyo has added another winner’s medal to her overflowing trophy cabinet.

The Mr Price Athletics Club athlete showed fellow competitors a clean pair of heels to clinch the 42km Nedbank Johannesburg Marathon on Sunday.

The 33-year-old Zimbabwean marathon queen romped past the finish tape in 2:46:34, beating her closest challenger, Dimakatso Manong, by almost 10 seconds.

Her victory comes as a measure of revenge after she finished second to Lesotho’s Mamorallo Tjoka in the Nedbank Soweto Marathon. – CAJ News

All Zimbabwean affair in cup final

JOHANNESBURG

Forgotten Warriors midfield anchor Edelbert Dinha wants to win the lucrative Nedbank Cup as recompense for failing to make it to the South African premiership.

The veteran player, who has helped first division club Mpumalanga Black Aces to the final of the 32-team tournament, said he was excited at playing in a cup final after several disappointing years.

Aces shocked Free State Stars 2-1 in the weekend’s semi-final clash courtesy of a Kabamba Musasa 60th minute strike to set up a final with favourites Mamelodi Sundowns.

Dinha said although their May 31 opponents were a household name, he was confident Aces would make history by becoming the first team from the lower echelons of South African football to win a major tournament.

“It has been quite some time since I played in a cup final let alone win a trophy,” said the former Orlando Pirates skipper. – CAJ News

Single shot secures win for Watson

BY SPORTS REPORTER

HARARE

Zimbabwean golfer Denis Watson birdied the final hole to win the FedEx Kinko’s Classic at Lakeway, Texas by a single shot during the weekend, taking advantage of countryman Nick Price’s late collapse.

Watson closed with a three-under 69 to finish at 10-under.

Price, who shot a 75 to finish at nine-under, appeared to be in control through most of the round. But watery double bogeys on 15 and 16 dropped him out of the lead, and an 18th-hole par left him a stroke back.

Namibia hold Warriors to goal-less draw

HARARE

Senior Zimbabwe Warriors were held to a goal-less draw by visiting Desert Warriors of Namibia in an African Championship Qualifier first leg played at Gwanzura Stadium on Sunday.

The Warriors lacked co-ordination in defence, midfield and strike-force, with players seeming to forget they were part of a team. There was a sad display of poor attacking and shaky positioning each time they were in possession of the ball.

Head coach Jose Valinhos was not happy with the sluggish display, blaming meagre preparations caused by Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA)’s allocating them less time. He said ZIFA had also delayed in releasing funding for accommodation, allowances and other administration costs.

The Warriors failed to exploit the home advantage as they battled to find the nets, and strikers missed chance after chance.

But it was Masvingo United midfielder Ovidy Karuru and former Motor Action striker Clement Matawu who proved beyond doubt that the two were in a class of their own.

The Zimbabwe Young Warriors mauled visiting Lesotho 2-0 to progress to the second round of the African Youth Championships in a scintillating performance at Gwanzura Stadium on Saturday.

The Young Warriors successfully reversed their 0-1 defeat suffered in Maseru, Lesotho a fortnight ago when they came into the second leg a rejuvenated side.

Two beautiful goals from Tendai Ranthokoane and skilful Tafadzwa Rusike propelled Zimbabwe to the next stage of the Youth Championship against Rwanda. – CAJ News

Fans on rampage in ticket price rage

BY STAFF REPORTER

HARARE

Fans went on the rampage in Chibuku Stadium at the weekend, destroying property worth billions of dollars, as champions Dynamos played to a one-all draw against newcomers Kiglon.

In the skirmishes, cars were stoned – including that of Football Association Chief Executive Officer Henrietta Rushwaya – and a section of the precast walling at the Harare venue was brought down.

Fans were furious at the hike in the entrance fee to Z$500m for the main ground and Z$1bn for the VIP section.

Armed police dispersed the rioters.

Champions held back by newcomers

HARARE

Defending champions Dynamos showed clear signs of a CAF Champions League hangover as they were held to a one-all draw by new boys Kiglon at Chibuku Stadium.

The Harare giants, lacking the cutting edge that saw them dismiss African champions Etoile du Sahel last week, allowed the CBZ Premiership surprise packages, Kiglon, to maintain their unbeaten run.

Lloyd Chitembwe’s charges punished inept defending by the visitors, as midfielder Tarisayi Nyamunamwendo opened the scoring in the 26th minute.

Leading scorer Edward Sadomba brought DeMbare level after the restart when he fired home a crisp free-kick.

Last minute goal gives Highlanders the edge

BULAWAYO

A 77th minute goal by stylish midfielder Johannes Ngodzo inspired Highlanders to victory over Harare rivals Caps United in a grudge CBZ Premiership match played at Barbourfields Stadium.

The stocky player took advantage of flatfooted defending from the visitors as he connected into the net a cross from Cuthbert Malajila to send the Bosso fans, part of a paltry crowd, into a frenzy.

The win ensured Highlanders maintained their dominance over Caps United, a team that has not managed a win against them in recent years.

“We played well, especially in the second half. The boys showed immense fighting spirit,” said Bosso manager Emmet Ndlovu.

Caps United coach Luke Masomere was not amused with the match officials, his inept strike-force or the effect of injuries.

We did not play well; that is why we lost. The midfield and strike force did not attack. Also, injuries worked against us,” he said. – CAJ News

Mwaruwari picked for testimonial match

Zimbabwe captain Benjani Mwaruwari is to play in a testimonial match for Super Eagles skipper Austin Jay Jay Okocha.

The Manchester City hitman’s name is on a list of African stars, which includes Nwankwo Kanu of Portsmouth. Kanu has thrown his weight behind efforts to get top English Premiership stars to Nigeria next month for his former national team captain’s final match.

Kanu, who confirmed that he had already opened talks with the players, also confirmed that he too would be giving up some of his holiday to make the trip to Warri.
