Warriors 2010 worries

BY GRACE CHIRUMANZU
THE Zimbabwe national soccer team, affectionately known as the Warriors, is in a tricky and worrying position three of the continental Group 2, trimming their chances of the 2010 World Cup, in South Africa.
The Warriors who were held to a goalless draw by the visiting Harambee Stars of Kenya, at Rufaro Stadium on June 22, a week after a traumatizing 0-2 defeat in Nairobi, are in a horrific quandary.

Only group winners from the 12 continental groups, together with the best eight runners-up, will advance to Round Three of the World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The stalemate at Rufaro, last week, appeared to have left the Warriors in a deadlock, thwarting possible hopes of topping the group as Guinea cruise to the top, after hammering Namibia 4-0, in Conakry.
Coached by Brazilian-born, Valinhos, Zimbabwe is certainly down, but the Warriors are not out, as they are still in the battle with a dreadful challenge of beating the log leaders at home on September 7, at the same time praying that Namibia, who are making the tail of the pack in the group, pull a surprise win on Kenya, or at least hold the Harambee Stars in Nairobi, the previous day.

Their next challenge will then be on October 10, against the ironically, Brave Warriors of Namibia, in what will be their last assignment of the group 2 qualifiers of the global and continental showdown.
Zimbabwe will have to forget about South Africa if they fall to Guinea, in September, but wait for the rare opportunity of being selected among the best eight runners up, to progress to Round three.
If they make it to the next round, the Warriors will fight a doubtful and stiff battle of the World Cup but, they would have amassed half of the booty, booking a place in the continental showpiece, set for Angola, in two years time.

Round three, is where 20 teams will be grouped into 5 round-robin, home-and-away groups of 4 teams with the eventual winners from each of the groups winning the available five African slots into the 2010 World Cup.

A total of 200 teams, worldwide, have since entered the race for the available 31 places. South Africa is the only team, which has qualified for the global showpiece, by virtue of being the host nation.
