Off the field

BY GRACE CHIRUMANZU
Benjani Mwaruwari has been a key figure in the development of football in the country. He provided the funding for the senior national team's stay in France in the run up to the 2006 African Cup of Nations.

Now Zimbabwean soccer fans think that the Manchester City striker has failed the nation in the 2010 World Cup campaign. Grace Chirumanzu caught up with him in an exclusive interview.

G.C.. Zimbabwe is now at position three in the group. Do you believe we are still in with a chance for the World Cup and AFCON?

B.M. Of course we still have a chance, if we win the last two matches.

G.C.. You haven’t scored since the qualifiers began and a lot of things have been said. Some think that the team lacks a playmaker or reliable midfielders to supply you with good balls. Others have said you are just not doing enough yourself. What is your say?

B.M.. We should not really put the blame on anyone. It’s my problem… (he sighs). It is the time, it’s something that happens to me. It happened when I was at Portsmouth, I went for about 15 matches without scoring but eventually I did. Hopefully I will score for Zimbabwe.

G.C. How do you feel wearing the captain’s arm band?

B.M. It’s an honor because every player wishes to be captain.

G.C. What do you think is lacking in the team?

B.M. We just need to work hard and score.

G.C. Peter Ndlovu has not been called in the team. Do you think we can do without him?

B.M. Well, I’m not a coach, maybe if I was I would have called him.

G.C. There were reports of you and Peter Ndlovu fighting during the Warriors camp last year. How true was that?

B.M. They were false stories.

G.C. What is your relationship with Peter like?

B.M. Why do you keep asking about him?

G.C. There where rumours that Peter Ndlovu was not called because you two don’t get on well, I just wanted to clear things up for the fans.

B.M. Why can’t you ask me what my relation with Energy (Murambadoro) is like?

G.C. Ok, what is your relationship with Energy like?

B.M. Very good.

G.C. What do you think of the new coach, Valinhos?

B.M. He has done well and he is a good man.

G.C. Who have you seen to be a young star with great potential in Zimbabwe?

B.M. Onismor (Bhasera), Vusa Nyoni, Clemence (Matawu).
