Gunners crash out

Premiership debutants, Gunners Football Club, crashed out of the CBZ FA Cup after losing to Dynamos, in penalty shoot-outs of the quarter final match, at Rufaro stadium, on October 26.

Moses Chunga’s charges proved competitive the whole of the afternoon, scoring first through Ramson Zhuwawo, 30 minutes into play.

However, it was not long before the Glamour Boys equalized, five minutes later, when Benjamin Marere scored from a superb cross by Norman Maroto. Maroto could have avoided extra time and shoot-outs had he packed the ball with his left foot, following a cross from Marere, in the 41st minute, but he was too slow.

Gunners hung on with Trymore Mutisi sealing the defense, not even generous to give substitute, Edward Sadomba, an opportunity to mark his return to Dynamos.

Desmond Maringwa’s commendable crosses were neither wasted nor left unattended, but Mutisi and his teammates kept clearing them away, with Captain Zhaimu Jambo heading Maringwa’s pass out before Wonder Sithole.

Sithole wasted his chance after a spirited sprint, when he hesitated to chip in a volley above an advancing goalkeeper, Lovemore Makwavarara.

Jambo and former Masvingo United player, Ovidy Karuru, were denied time to shine by Dynamos defender, Danisa Phiri, who continued to guard his side’s nets, in what was a blistering encounter.

Gunners’ hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals of the tournament were trimmed down when defender, Carlington Nyadombo missed his side’s first penalty, hitting the crossbar.

Dynamos are through to the semi-finals and will meet the winners of the quarter final match between Caps United and Highway F.C of Mutare, in the semi-finals.
