Off the field – Daniel Zokoto

BY GRACE CHIRUMANZU

Former Harare United striker, Daniel Zokoto (25), is a player who has contributed to Monomotapa's success in the premiership this season.

G.C. How does it feel when your team is producing good results and topping the table for months?

D.Z. It’s good. I’m looking forward to a favorable outcome.

G.C. You have been with Monos since Division 1, what would it mean to win the championship?

D.Z. It would be a killer! I would have achieved something big in domestic football.

G.C. Norman Mapeza appears tough as a coach. What is he like? Does it affect you when he shouts during matches?

D.Z. He is strict and professional. He appears harsh when he shouts but we see it as a coach who is encouraging us and telling us the right thing to do. He has encouraged and motivated us to be where we are today.

G.C. What is your ideal woman like?

D.Z. (laughs) Outspoken, wears spectacles, slim, short hair, a journalist.

G.C. Oh spare us! What are the crazy football moments you remember?

D.Z. We were playing Kambuzuma in Chinhoyi in 2004 and we had about four of our players red carded. We started protesting and nearly got whipped by the riot police. Bancho (Lovemore Simango), Godfrey (Mungove) and Chale (Charles Chiutsa) were there.

G.C. Who are you closest to in your club?

D.Z. Everyone.

G.C. What should Monos do to avoid losing key players to other clubs?

D.Z. They should continue treating us like they do. We are all respected as players and no-one is treated as more special than another. We are a family.

G.C. How do you relate to each other as a team in camp?

D.Z. Godfrey Mungove (Monos goalkeeper) is always talking. He is good at teasing the players and sometimes our coach.

G.C. What inspires you to play football?

D.Z. The game itself. I grew up in a Kadoma where soccer was always played and it has become a part of my life.
