Simango is “a young man who brings much hope for the development of Mozambique, for inclusive governance, participatory governance, in a way that will consecrate the MDMs slogan, Mozambique for all,” Carvalho said.
The MDM leader broke away from main opposition Renamo party last September after its leadership chose not to nominate him for re-election as mayor of Beira, Mozambiques second city. He ran as an independent and defeated his old party in a city traditionally considered a stronghold.
Frelimo, the party that has ruled Mozambique since independence in 1975, has already nominated President Armando Guebuza to stand for re-election. Guebuza won with 64 percent of the vote in 2004.
Analysts say it would be a longshot for either Simango or longtime Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama to defeat him.
Campaigning will officially begin on September 13, according to the calendar set by Mozambiques national elections commission.
