Junior league formed

soccer_ballBULAWAYO - A junior community soccer league has been formed to cater for clubs that cannot afford transport and affiliation fees charged by ZIFA. The Ghetto league whose games are played in Magwegwe suburb has so far attracted 11 junior football teams comprising of Under 13, 15, and Under 17 squads.

The league’s secretary, Lizwe Sweswe (elder brother to former Dynamos defender Thomas Sweswe) said the league was formed following recommendations by sport administrator Nelson Matongorere.

Nelson Matongorere advised us to form this community league because we have a wealth of grassroots talent that is going to waste due to lack of funding, he said.

Despite the community set up, the league follows all the mandatory 17 FIFA rules.

We observe all the FIFA rules in our games so that our youngsters grow up with a thorough grounding of what is expected of them, Sweswe said.

He encouraged established Premier Soccer League teams to come and watch Ghetto League matches from time to time to scout for talent and give the players a much needed break into top-flight soccer.

He said South African based Tapuwa Kapini and Thomas Sweswe had pledged to assist in the programme.
