Majome paves the way for female politicians

Born on December 20, 1971 she is the Member of Parliament for Harare West Constituency of the House of Assembly, the Deputy Minister Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs, a Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Constitutional Affairs, a Member of the National Executive Committee of the MDC and Deputy secretary for Legal and Parliamentary Affairs.

Majome possesses vast political experience. In 2000 she was the youngest female commissioner in the National Constitutional Commission. From 2002-2006 she was the National Spokesperson of the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) and in 2003 she was elected Councillor for Ward one and Chairperson of Hwange Local Board. From 2004-2006 she worked as the Vice Chairperson for Harare North District and in 2006-7 she was a consultant to UNIFEM Sudan in gender justice in post-conflict reconstruction.

Majomes vision for Harare
It is her fervent hope that the Ministry of Justice can meet the needs of prisoners and the basic requirements of justice. In the Harare West Constituency she said her vision was to have, “A parliamentary constituency in which the constituents are aware of, or actively contribute to, the maximisation of the benefits of a parliamentary democracy in their lives. A Harare West in which a political culture of… responsibility and participation replaces that of apathy and patronage”.

Majome expressed a desire to implement training and capacity building in human rights, civic education and leadership. These would be strategies for human rights and civil activism based community empowerment.
“I also want to set up administrative institutions like a constituency development office but I am financially disadvantaged. US$100 for being an MP and the same for being a minister does not enable me to meet these objectives. Therefore, I call upon the government to come up with a parliamentary budget that helps us to fulfil our promises.
