Peace half marathon

cleopas_mwembeBINGA - As commemorations for this year's International Day of Peace unfolded, more than 200 athletes took part in the Kujatana Kubotu peace half Marathon over the weekend. This year's race, which was sponsored to the tune of US$ 32 000 by Twalumba Holdings, was held under the theme, "National Healing and Reconciliation Begins with Me and You" (Pictured: Cleop

The 21km race, which attracted Matabeleland North based athletes in schools, uniformed forces and the local community, started at Manjolo business centre and ended at Binga growth point. The overall winner of the race, was Cleopas Mwembe of Chineko area in Binga who walked away with 5000 rand and a gold medal. The second runner up was Thulani Munkuli of Dobola ward who walked away with a silver medal plus 2500 Rand.

Norest Tshuma walked away with a bronze medal. The overall winner in female category was Fungai Chinyoka, a police officer stationed in Hwange.

Chinyoka was also declared the first, second and third winner in the uniformed forces female category after other female athletes in the uniformed forces did not participate in the marathon. She walked away with more than 5000 rand.

Forty nine-year-old pastor Phelimon Bhusumani was the oldest man to take part in the race and for his efforts he walked away with 400 rand.

Speaking at the occasion Twalumba Chief Executive, Nkululeko Sibanda, said that his company planned to offer scholarships for two school pupils in the area. The scholarship programme would see the pupils through their tertiary education.

“The Scholarship programme will enable them to continue with their studies while they train and enhance their talent. Twalumba Holdings is doing this because we strongly believe that Binga can develop through sport. Under this programme Twalumba Holdings will hire sports teachers who will train pupils and ensure that they still maintain good academic grades while excelling in sport,” he said.
