Anthrax outbreak in Tsholotsho

anthraxBULAWAYO - Cattle sales have been cancelled in Tsholotsho district as a result of a recent Anthrax outbreak. The Matabeleland North Provincial Veterinary officer, Dr Polex Moyo, said theoutbreak was discovered in the northern parts of Tsholotsho about two weeks ago.

“The department has placed the district under quarantine until the situation is under control. We have carried out some vaccinations in the northern parts of the district and should be moving to other affected area this week,” said Moyo. He said the situation would be reviewed within a month to see if the outbreak was under control.

Anthrax is an acute disease caused by Bacillus anthracis. It affects both humans and animals. Most forms of the disease are highly lethal. There are effective vaccines against anthrax, and some forms of the disease respond well to antibiotic treatment.
