Experienced athletes grace UZ race

athleticsUZ sports director, Life Chemhere, applauded proceedings at the 2009 University of Zimbabwe Vice Chancellor 10km race as a beaming success following the participation of experienced athletes.

We are thankful to the experienced athletes for giving the young and promising competitors a high level of competition. Their participation enhanced the status of the competition and improved the profile of the competition,” said Chemhere.

Jonathan Chinyoka, emerged as the gold medalist of the eighth edition of the annual race at the traditional venue, UZ, last weekend, in a time of 31min 19 seconds. He outraced the defending champion, Kelvin Pangiso, who crossed the finishing line in 32 minutes 4 seconds. The man to finish third was Zimbabwe Prison Services Dzingai Dandare, who arrived home 21 seconds after Pangiso.

Meanwhile, the womens race saw Olivia Chitate claiming the gold medal in 38 mins 55s while Chiedza Chikore came behind her in 40 mins 14s. Monica Kativhu of Lobels finished third in 44 mins 47s. Lobels Elford Moyo reclaimed his title as the wheelchair 10km road race champion to beat Edmund Makutya in a time of 31mins 34 sec.

The visually challenged 2km race was won by Edwin Ndlovu, who became the winner in 14mins 17sec with his closest competitor being Washington Nyakupa who finished the race in 15 mins 16sec. The third to cross the finishing line was Lovemore Matiza in 16 mins 24s.
