Zimbabwe beat Zambia to win Cosafa title for a record fourth time

cosafa_zim_winsHARARE-ZIMBABWE'S Warriors beat neighbours Zambia 3-1 to lift the regional Cosafa Senior Challenge tournament for a record fourth time in a thrilling final at Rufaro yesterday.

After an early scare by Zambia in the first half in which they raced into the lead with a wonder goal from striker Henry Banda on 24 minutes, the Warriors staged a dramatic come back from behind to equalise three minutes later through CAPS United big striker Nyasha Mushekwi. Mushekwi, who scored a brace pounced on a lose ball in the danger zone before sliding the ball into the net with the simplest of finishes.

The free scoring Warriors striker returned to haunt Chipolopolo on 35 minutes when he leapt highest to head into the net a wonderful cross from the right by right back Gilbert Mapemba.

But, the Warriors were not finished yet as Dynamos striker Cuthbert Malajila weighed in with the third goal at the stroke of half time after he was set up by striking partner Mushekwi in the penalty box.

The win sent the whole stadium into delirium.

The Warriors went into the final having won the tournament on three occasions in 2000, 2003 and 2005. Zambia also went into yesterday’s final having won the tournament three times. But, the win by Zimbabwe yesterday made them the most successful team in the southern region.
