“It has been another successful year as we have been number one for three years in a row. The disappointment was not winning a grand slam. However, I feel proud being ranked above the Williams sisters, as they are unbelievable when playing. They are not far behind us so we need to work hard. Being on top motivates me so I will be taking it year by year and I hope to be playing for the next two years,” she said.
The 31-year-old said she had her full concentration on tennis and hopes to pass on her talent to the younger generation after retiring.
“I hope to come and settle in Zimbabwe and have more time for coaching and helping kids get scholarships. I am inspired by the kids’ passion for the sport and their ability as great athletes,” said Black.
She believes Zimbabwean tennis players need to be applauded for managing to produce recognized professional players under the difficult economic challenges the country faced in the recent past.
“It is difficult to become professional, a few thousands in a billion who make it. We have Genius (Chidzikwe), Gwinyai (Tongoona), Byron (Black) and Wayne (Black) who are professionals and I believe we have done well, but I believe the next generation would do better,” she said.
