The project will target primary and secondary schools with a series of tennis tournaments planned that will be used to identify promising youngsters who will be recruited for further training with sponsorship from the Mastan Tennis Academy (MTA). As part of the project a schools tennis tournament was held at Mutare Girls High more than a week ago with eight primary schools taking part in the tournament.
A total of 70 primary school students had a chance to participate. From the tournament, one could see that there was great potential as shown by the good strokes, good ball control, alertness and speed when attacking the ball. This shows that a lot of training had been done during the preparatory stages, said Dzuwa, the MTA head coach. Dzuwa, a former Zimbabwe tennis champion, said the aim of the project was to produce top class performers who could once again lift the national flag high at international tennis tournaments.
We are aiming at producing top-creamers in the country who would lift the national flag high, he said. Nzula, who is assistant to Dzuwa at the MTA, said: These kids (trained under the project) grow up with resilience to play top flight tennis like our brothers Martin Dzuwa and Genius Chidzikwe did. Commenting on the quality of talent shown during the Mutare Girls high school tournament, MTB chairman Wilson Chiwewe said: I was very impressed by the performance of junior girls especially Bearing Primary school who came first on the junior girls category.
Chiwewe said preparations were underway for the under 16 and 18 tournaments planned for next week in Mutare.
