Zim trio poised for ABSA Premiership

soccer_ballJOHANNESBURG Three Zimbabwean internationals are eyeing promotion into South Africas ABSA Premiership league at the end of this season,

as their Inland First National Division side, Witbank Spurs, are well-poised to end the season in the top two.

The trio of former 2006 Zimbabwean PSL Golden Boot winner, Ralph Matema and the Mubaiwa twins Abraham and Patrick, has been in explosive form for their Mpumalanga-based side, which at the time of going to print was tied on 30 points with group leaders, African Warriors.

Spurs, who began the season rather poorly but picked up form lately, were trailing only because of an inferior goal difference, with three games remaining before the end of the season.

An official at the club said that the three Zimbabweans were behind the clubs purple patch, as they had rarely missed a match since the third and final lap of the three-round campaign.

Matema has been scoring crucial goals and coming up with vital assists for us this season, said the official.

The Mubaiwa brothers have also played a very big role and if we get promoted, the trio will be some of our heroes, no doubt.

Matema, who refused to return to PSL giants, Orlando Pirates at the end of his initial two-season loan spell with Spurs early this season, seems to have done his career a good turn, as he has suddenly re-discovered the form that made him a household name in the Zimbabwean PSL, where at one time he was the most feared striker with Bulawayo-based Highlanders.

If Spurs end the season in the top spot, they will be involved in a play-off double-header with Coastal stream winners, with the winner going through, while a second spot will see them participate in the four-team mini-tournament that will also feature the second last team from the PSL.
