Dynamos were supposed to play their opening league match of the season with a date against champions Gunners last Saturday but the match failed to kick off as the Harare giants, who were also scheduled to play in the Independence Trophy final the following day did not show up arguing they could not play two games in two days. The PSL is yet to decide their fate.
However, tomorrow Dynamos begin another journey in their search for glory on the domestic soccer scene when they square off against Highlanders. Dynamos still have sad memories of last season in which they were beaten to the finishing line by eventual winners Gunners after having led the race from the start of the league season when Elvis Chiweshe took over the managerial reigns of Dynamos from David Mandigora.
Dynamos last won the coveted league title in 2007 and went on to reach the semi-finals of the African Champions League the following year under the tutelage of Mandigora. But since then, DeMbare have struggled to find that form and will this season be hoping to wrestle the title from Gunners. Chiweshe’s charges, however, go into battle tomorrow bouyed by their 2-0 victory over Highlanders in the Independence Trophy final before a heaving National Sports Stadium. Dynamos defender Guthrie Zhokinyu and chief striker Cuthbert Malajila scored the two goals that counted for the Harare giants to lay their hands on the Uhuru Cup for the first time since 2004.
And, Malajila is expected once again to lead the Dynamos attack against Highlanders tomorrow. But, Dynamos will have to be at their best as Highlanders’ Egyptian coach Mohammed Fathy will be looking for revenge when the two teams face each other again. Highlanders have signed experienced players who included former Warriors midfielder Joel Luphahla and veteran utility player Chipo Tsodzo. Former South African based defender Bekithemba Ndlovu is also back and Bosso will be hoping that experience will come in handy for them against Dynamos.
On Thursday, CAPS United also face another tricky encounter against newcomers Black Mambas at the same venue. The Green Machine were shocked by another Premiership debutant Douglas Warriors in their opening game last week when they were held to a 0-0 stalemate.
FIXTURES: Wednesday: Dynamos v Highlanders (Rufaro); Hwange v Kiglon (Colliery).
