A team comprising of 30 players went to a camp at Prince Edward School last week to begin preparations for the Youth Olympic tournament in Singapore and team Coach Dumaza Dube said he was happy with the way preparations were going.
“I am happy with the way preparations have gone so far. The guys are responding well to the drills. They are looking sharp, but the problem it that we will be forced to break camp due to financial problems. We will be in camp up to Saturday. We will then regroup at the end of the month because Zifa are facing financial problems. However, I will not allow these problems to spill into the team,” he said.
The team was originally scheduled to be in camp for two weeks, but the duration was cut short owing to financial problems. Project manager for the team, Harry Taruva, said both Zifa and the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee are running the programme “We are no longer following the original plan because of financial constraints. We want to travel to Botswana or South Africa during the course of preparations for an international friendly,” said Taruva.
Preparations for theYouth Olympic Games began last month with the selection of players at regional levels. The Zimbabwe Under-15 team was nominated by Fifa to be the sole representatives of the continent at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games scheduled to run from August 14 to 26 in Singapore.
