Winter’s night from the yard of Champion trainer Lisa Harris, and ridden by Champion Jockey and regular pilot Dewi Williams, was the convincing winner of the Spar Tankard and is undoubtedly the horse to beat.
Jiminy Cricket, from the Kirk Swanson yard and once ridden by South African Jockey Pierre Corne Orffer, ran a good second behind Winter’s Night from a wide draw and now drawn well at three along with shorter distance of 1800m. From the small yard of Dave Willey, Tremayne will take his place and was one of the fastest finishing horses in the Spar Tankard, finishing an incredible third under a good ride from Brain Nyawo.
From the Macleod yard, there is an interesting runner in Norwegian Wood, who has had one run in Zimbabwe in which he was victorious. Although his victory was in a lower division, he is capable of springing a surprise. Current leading trainer Lisa Harris also steps out leading sprinter Syracuse and although he is yet to prove he can stay the 1800 m, anything is possible with the services of Willie Uys. Lisa’s third runner in the race is last year’s winner of the Spar Tankard and with the services of current leading jockey Ouinton Riddle, he deserves to be respected.
Kirk Swanson steps out six runners and besides Captain’s Tiger and Jimmy Cricket, the upcoming individual, Super Sha, takes part. Winner of three of his last four starts,he gets the services of Francois Herholdt and having ridden in Dubai, Mauritius and South Africa, has what it takes to win.
