FIFA has committed resources in the form of start-up funds, coaching manuals, training equipment and skilled personnel for the programme. The first two legs of the SAFA Grassroots Football Programme are scheduled for Tshwane from 18 – 22 May 2010 and Mafikeng from 25 29 May 2010. The SAFA Grassroots Football Programme is aimed at introducing children between the ages of six and 12 to the football environment. However, the first two legs will target children between the ages of nine and 12, said South African Football Association Technical Director, Serame Letsoaka.
A total of three thousand children and 60 coaches are expected to participate in the two programmes. The first four days will consist of a Train the Trainers coaching seminar, which will culminate in a football festival attended by 1 500 children at each venue. The SAFA Grassroots Football Programme will then be rolled out in the remaining 50 SAFA Regions after the 2010 FIFA World CupTM. Our main objective for grassroots football is to bring as many people as possible into football. We believe that mass participation will help us to develop the game even further, said Sedibe.
SAFAs Technical Director, Serame Letsoaka, said SAFA Grassroots Football was relevant in the development of footballers at an early age. The earlier they start the sooner they grow accustomed to the football environment. It is a great way of promoting football and the structured learning programmes will help them as they progress, said Letsoaka. FIFA Instructor, Horst Kriete, will conduct coaching seminars in Tshwane and Mafikeng respectively. He is SAFAs former Director of Coaching.
