SAFA clarifies bonus debate

JOHANNESBURG - The South African Football Association (SAFA) has expressed its concern and disappointment relating to media reports regarding the issue of bonuses and honoraria to its members of the Executive Committee and members of the board of directors of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.

In a statement to The Zimbabwean, Safa said that while it appreciated the intense level of attention and interest in any matter regarding the Association, it appealed for fair and balanced reporting at this time especially as the country draws closer to the 2010 FIFA World cup South Africa.

In brief, any decision made on payments of this nature must first be ratified and confirmed by the General Council of the Association. At this stage, the General Council has yet to discuss and take key decisions on any funds to be paid out to the Association, and we wish to place on record that no such confirmation has taken place. We also wish to point out that it is not unusual for hosting nations to discuss the issue of World Cup bonuses, but no decisions have been made on the matter both inside SAFA and the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee South Africa, the association said.

Safa said it regretted that the members of the Organising Committee (OC) Board were drawn into the matter. It said that the matter was currently under discussion at executive level, and therefore the OC Board Members should under no circumstances be drawn into the matter.
