ZESA leave fans in the dark

zesaBULAWAYO - Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has reneged on its earlier promise not to switch off electricity during the month long FIFA World Cup to enable the soccer loving nation to enjoy the spectacle.

ZESA has, since the start of the World Cup on Friday, continued its load shedding leaving fans frustrated. In an interview ZESA spokesperson, Fullard Gwasira said the company had already put in place measures that would lead to the provision of consistent power supply. We are doing everything we can to make sure that our people do not miss a glimpse of the excitement the World Cup is going to bring and we are putting every measure to facilitate a smooth and reliable power supply, he said.

However, fans this week told The Zimbabwean how disappointed they had been after power cuts continued unabated despite the promise. Others who decided to take extra measures resorted to buying generators just in case power was switched off. “What ZESA is doing is not fair at all. Now we are going to miss the World Cup, yet the event is just next door,” said Ngonidzashe Maungaindze after power was disconnected during the Ghana and Serbia match on Sunday.

He said that not everyone could afford to buy generators. Another fan, Mthokozisi Nxumalo, said he had resorted to watching repeat matches that are aired after 12 midnight but this was boring because in most cases he already knew the end result. “I have no choice but to wait for the repeat matches when there is power, he said.ZESA is also continuing power disconnection to defaulting residents and last week hundreds of residents in Bulawayos Nkulumane high-density suburb were left stranded after ZESA officials descended on them and disconnected power.

Several residents had their monthly bills as high as US$1 000 and were complaining bitterly accusing the power authority of inflating their charges describing them as unrealistic. Residents complained that ZESA had never notified them of the impending disconnections.
