SA Olympic bid may benefit Zimbabwe

RUSTENBURG The decision by the South Africa Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) to bid for the 2020 Olympic Games would give Zimbabwe a second chance to benefit from another major global sporting event.

SASCOC chief executive Tubby Reddy confirmed that South Africa could consider bidding to host the 2020 Olympic Games in what would be the countrys second attempt after Cape Town lost out to Athens for the 2004 Olympics.

The way forward would be to engage government and key stakeholders, but our intention is to provide a world-class city capable of hosting Africas first Olympic Games in 2020, said Reddy.

SASCOCs decision was influenced by International Olympic Committee (IOC) chairman Jacques Rogge, who said a South African Olympic bid would be very welcome given the manner in which the country was able to organise and smoothly host the 2010 edition of the FIFA World Cup.

Johannesburg and Durban are being seen as early favorites to host the Games if South Africa bid is successful.

Zimbabwe which is in an ideal geographical position to benefit from South Africas hosting of the Olympic Games failed to capitalise on the just ended World Cup in a development that saw the country losing out on the financial benefits that result in being directly associated with footballs premier event.

Critics say Zimbabwe government failed to aggressively market the countrys tourist attractions like the Victoria Falls and Great Zimbabwe Ruins and that this resulted in very little people visiting the country during the tournament.

The only benefit that Zimbabwean football lovers derived from the World Cup was watching five-time world champions Brazil in action against the Warriors at the refurbished National Sports Stadium in a warm-up match used by the South Americans to prepare for the football showcase in South Africa.
