Zimbabwe strikers move to SA hangs in the balance

JOHANNESBURG The long-sought move to the South African Premiership by red-hot Zimbabwean striker, Terrence Mandaza, continues to hang in the balance, after what seemed to be a done and dusted deal with Rustenburg-based Platinum Stars was deferred again this week.

Dinaledi, who had initially been reported to have been impressed by the striker, who spent last season rattling the nets in Botswana, said this week that they would only sign Mandaza if he impressed their yet-to-be-employed coach, just a few weeks before the ABSA Premiership action resumes for the 2010-11 season.

Stars, already home to Zimbabwean goalkeeper, Tapuwa Kapini, fired coach Steve Komphela for poor results a few weeks ago and are yet to employ his replacement, announcing this week that they were still review some applications from prospective candidates. The clubs Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Jason Raine, promised to make an announcement on their new technical team anytime soon.

“The issue of whether to sign Mandaza or not will rest with the new coach. We are reviewing applicants regarding the coaching post and we want to make sure we find right person before we make an announcement.”

Another failed bid to land a South African contract will result in heartbreak for Mandaza, hailed as the hottest property last season in Botswana, where he scored for fun banging in 42 goals in all competitions.

The striker failed to move to the ABSA Premiership last season, after trying out with Mpumalanga Black Aces.

He also failed to land a contract with both Ajax Cape Town and Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates this season, but was hopeful of making it at Stars, where he has spent the past few weeks training.
