Wheelchair tennis sensation

JOHANNESBURG Twenty-seven-year-old Nyasha Mharakurwa has risen above his physical disability to achieve a feat that most able-bodied people can only dream of.

Besides studying for his second degree, a Bcom in Sport Management, with the University of Johannesburg, the talented Zimbabwean has over the past three years made a serious impact as a wheelchair tennis player, not only in Africa, but in the world.

Barely three years after he became competitive in the sport, Mharakurwas glittering career saw him scoop eight singles and five doubles titles in various Zimbabwean and South African tournaments. The tennis sensation has also won Zimbabwes Annual National Sports Awards (ANSA) Best Sportsman with a Disability twice in a row in 2008 and 2009.

The year 2008 has so far been the biggest highlight of Mharakurwas career, as he won three singles and three doubles titles to end the year as the Number One African player in the sport. His good showing saw him get a sports bursary for his current studies by the University of Johannesburg.

Currently, my objective is to qualify and do well in the 2012 London Paralympic Games and I am determined and focused to achieve this goal. I have a lot of confidence in myself and believe that I can do well in the Paralympics if afforded a chance to participate, said Mharakurwa.

With the qualifying period for London 2012 running between March 2011 and March 2012, Mharakurwa is looking for a sponsor that will enable him to play at least eight more games during that time.

I am therefore, looking for a sponsor who will enable me to go on two tours of Europe, where I will play four games during each tour that will take my yearly number of games to 14 and put me within reach of qualifying.
