Curtain falls of chess champs

chessGABARONE The second Africa Youth Chess championships came to an end on August 28 in Gaborone, Botswana at Botswana National Productivity Centre.


South Africa dominated all of the categories from under 10 to under 18, however, Zimbabwean-born Mpumelelo Moyo came fifth with five points out of nine games of play. He drew against the eventual winner in this category, Bolard Paratema.

In the under 10 girls category Sasha Taruberekera from Zimbabwe came seventh with four points. She stood the test of time in a field which was dominated by South Africans.

Sune Du Toit of South Africa came first in the under 12 girls category, with Melody Machoko from Zimbabwe ranking fifth out of 10 players in her category.

There was a record attendance at the Championships, with the president of the Botswana Chess Federation, Tsepo Sitale, noting that, “Hosting this 2010 AYCC is a historic event for Botswana because it is the second country after South Africa to host the event.”

Seven countries took part namely: Botswana, Tunisia, Libya, South Africa, Madagascar, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
