ZIFA rejects Belgian coach

zifaHARARE- ZIFA president Cuthbert Dube has rejected recommendations by a ZIFA technical subcommittee which had seconded the appointment of Belgian coach, Tom Seintef, for the Warriors job at the expense of Norman Mapeza who has been in charge in of the team.

The subcommittee, which had been tasked with selecting a substantive Warriors coach, had thrown out Mapeza’s bid opting to appoint the Belgian coach Seintef who is currently coach the Brave Warriors of Namibia. The ZIFA board had endorsed the decision, but Dube objected, saying there was still need to make wider consultation in the recruitment drive.

Mapeza, who has received massive support from players including former captain Benjani Mwaruwari, will now take charge of the Warriors before ZIFA announces a substantive coach. Mapeza and his assistants, Joey Antipas and Brenna Msiska, were overlooked in the recruitment drive that raised eyebrows in the football fraternity. Friday Phiri was recommended as one of the assistant coaches because of his links to Monomotapa director Solomon Mugavazi who sits on the technical committee that was tasked to select coaches.

Richard Tswatwa, the CAPS United assistant goalkeepers coach was also recommended as one of the assistants seemingly because the CAPS United owner Twine Phiri also sits on the technical subcommittee. “What is worrying is that some of the coaches did not apply, but suddenly they have been recommended to various positions. But ZIFA president Dube was not happy with the recommendations and he personally wants Mapeza to be given the job,” said a ZIFA board member who asked not to be named.
