Cara chases Australian gold

cara__backJOHANNESBURG - The Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year, has kicked off in Melbourne with tennis sensation, Cara Black (pictured), Zimbabwes sole hope of silverware.

Fifth-seeded Black, who is eager to make up for last years disappointment when she and partner Liezel Huber lost in the Womens Doubles final of the tournament, is scheduled to team up with new partner Anastasia Rodionova to reclaim the title.

They are scheduled to play Australias Tamira Paszek and Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria in the first round of the competition today (Thursday).

The French Open offers Black an opportunity to put behind her a forgettable year in the Womens Doubles.

In 2010, she and her partner Huber failed to win any Grand Slam. Apart from losing in the final of the Australian Open, they also performed badly in the Wimbledon, French and United States Opens.

Harare-born Black, sister to the legendary Byron and Wayne, is among the best sportspersons to emerge from Zimbabwe. She is a former champion in the mentioned Grand Slams.

Meanwhile, the Australian Open kicked off on Monday. Black last won the Womens Doubles tournament in 2007 alongside Huber.
