Nyahora toast of SA marathon

athleticsPretoria - Star Zimbabwe athlete, Rutendo Nyahora, has added another feather to her cap, this time in record-breaking fashion in South Africa .

The 22-year-old was the toast of the Bestmed Tuks Race this weekend in Pretoria as she set a new record in the women’s 10km race.

Nyahora came home in a time of 35 min 02 sec, beating the previous record by 37 seconds.

She cruised home in front of South Africans Cathryn Skosana (37.11) and Mpho Mabuza (37.32).

Her compatriot, Lewis Masunda, favourite ahead of the meet, however was not as successful in the mens 10 km race, finishing third.

Stephen Mokoka won the event in a record time of 29.32, beating the previous best mark by five seconds. He was followed to the finish by Frik Guys (30.34) and Masunda (31.04).

The Bestmed Tuks Race started and finished at the University of Pretoria ‘s LC de Villiers Sport Grounds;

It is the first year that Bestmed have been involved with the marathon, having launched their three-year sponsorship of the race last Tuesday. The sponsorship follows a similar partnership with the Bestmed Eersterust Marathon that took place on January 15 of this year, another community development initiative that forms part of Bestmed’s social investment calendar.

I would like to congratulate all those who took part in the 2011 Bestmed Tuks Race, and especially the winners. The quality of the field today was outstanding, as evidenced by the fact that three new record marks have been set. Community-based projects that promote social development, health and fitness, form a vital part of Bestmed’s plans for the future and our further association with Tuks and its large student base is really just the beginning of a long and rewarding partnership in this area of sport development, Bestmed CEO, Dries La Grange told The Zimbabwean after the race.
