SAMWU wants immediate release of Gwisai & 45 activists

The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) has added voice to calls by the MDC that the 46 human rights activits who were arrested on Saturday should be released immediately. The 46 including International Socialist Organisation (ISO) general coordinator Munyaradzi Gwisai were arrested on charges of organising a meeting to allegedly topple the government of Zimbabwe.

The MDC on Monday called for the immediate and unconditional release of the 46 activists. The party said it was inconceivable for the police to assume that a mere 46 people can topple a government by simply viewing old video footage from Tunisia and Egypt.

Today, SAMWU said this unprovoked attack on a peaceful political education session is indicative of the type of terror that was unleashed by Zanu PF in the run up the last elections. It said the purpose then as now, is clearly to instil fear into the general population in an attempt to demobilise democratic forces from asserting their rights.

Zimbabwe continues to be under siege from the unpopular Zanu PF. The working class and the poor continue to bear the brunt of the prolonged economic crisis caused by senior Zanu PF politicians continue to loot from them. – The MDC Today – Issue No: 153
