Cara chases French gold

cara_blackJOHANNESBURG - Tennis second Grand Slam kicks off in Paris tomorrow (Monday) with Zimbabwe tennis star, Cara Black (Pictured), eager to win a first French Open title and end a three year title drought.

While she has achieved success in the other Grand Slams, namely the United States Open, Australian Open and Wimbledon as a Doubles player, the French Open has remained elusive to the Harare-born player. She and new partner Anastasia Rodionova will be hoping for a change of fortunes when the Doubles resume later this week at Roland Garros. The pair is scheduled to play Australias Tamira Paszek and Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria in the first round of the competition.

Black, who has raked in more than $6 million in prize money, had a forgettable tour in 2010 after failing to win any of the Grand Slams on offer.

She and then-partner Liezel Huber lost to Williams sisters Serena and Venus in the final of the Australian Open and also performed badly in the Wimbledon, French and US Opens. Despite that, there is no denying the 32-year-old, sister to the legendary Byron and Wayne, is among the best sportspersons to emerge from Zimbabwe.

Black, a former champion in the mentioned Grand Slams, last won in 2008 when she and Huber claimed the US Open Doubles.

The French Open is one of the most prestigious events in tennis and it has the widest worldwide broadcasting and audience of all regular events in this sport. Because of the slow playing surface the event is widely considered to be the most physically demanding tennis tournament in the world.
