ZNA threatened by reforms

NGEZI – The Zimbabwe National Army will oppose the security reforms being championed by human rights groups, a senior army official has said.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony of 76 Platoon Sergeants who went through a Modern and Asymmetric Warfare Course at 52 Infantry Battalion here, Colonel Terence Sharaunga said the army was now threatened by security sector reforms being championed by the NGOs and Human Rights Groups. Sharaunga, who is part of Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) top personnel said:

"We cannot talk of any security reforms because Zimbabwe is not coming from any conflict. We know that there are some British Agents who are at the forefront of calling for the security sector reforms. As ZNA we now feel threatened with these so called security sector reforms, which are grossly aimed at subverting our cohesion as a force."

The Army Colonel said Western countries had targeted the leadership of President Mugabe and wanted to effect regime change, which he said the army would not allow.

"Our leadership and command has been targeted. Elements of regime change are desperately seeking the easy way to the State House. But as ZNA we are very solid and prepared for any security threats," said Sharaunga.

Defence Minister Emerson Mnangagwa has openly said the army will not accept any security sector reforms. Army Generals throughout the country have embarked on military intimidation and mobilisation that is meant to ensure victory for Mugabe and Zanu (PF).
