Games: Medals table, Wednesday

As of Wednesday morning, South Africa enjoyed an enormous lead in the medals table at the 10th All-Africa Games in Maputo.

South African teams and athletes had won 30 of the 96 medals awarded by the end of play on Tuesday. The South Africans had taken 11 gold, seven silver and 12 bronze medals.

Most of the South African triumphs were in the swimming pool – the South Africans took nine gold, six silver and eight bronze medals in the swimming events. Particularly outstanding were the three golds won by Karin Prinsloo – in the women’s 100 metre and 200 metre freestyle, and the 50 metre backstroke.

South Africa also dominated the triathlon, winning both the men’s and the women’s gold, the women’s silver and the men’s bronze. South Africa also picked up three bronze medals in the karate contests.

Second in the table is Tunisia, with 14 medals (four gold, seven silver and three bronze). Half of these were won in the swimming pool, and half in karate.

Algeria is third in the medals league, with 12 – two gold, two silver and eight bronze. Eight of these were won in Karate and three in swimming.
