Come home and register, Moyo begs exiles

Zimbabwean exiles should take advantage of the forthcoming festive season to prepare for the next general elections, says MDC-T chairman, Lovemore Moyo.

With the Diaspora vote now unlikely to be granted for the 2013 elections, Moyo called on the great number of Zimbabweans living in neighbouring countries and overseas to take advantage of the Christmas and New Year holidays to register to vote.

“We know that exiles would have loved to vote in their foreign bases, but since the Diaspora vote is now unlikely, my appeal is for those visiting home for the holidays to register to vote,” Moyo told The Zimbabwean early this week.

Although no exact figures are known of how many come home during the holidays, tens of thousands are expected to visit their relatives.

“Most of those who left after 2008 were already registered voters, so they only need to check if their names are still in the voters’ roll and re-register for those who cannot find theirs. Those who have not registered before can also do that during the holidays,” added the Speaker of Parliament.

Moyo, who is likely to stand for his traditional Matobo constituency, appealed to those who want to see a change from the Zanu (PF) government, which has battered Zimbabwe to its knees both politically and economically.

“To those who want to see a democratic Zimbabwe, my advice is that they should take the time to canvass for the MDC-T within their relatives and families so that they re-ignite the spirit of change in them,” said Moyo.

“Most of the exiles, as breadwinners for their families, are in a good position to influence political opinion and make agents of change. There are areas where the MDC cannot penetrate and it is up to these people, who toil every day in foreign lands to keep their families afloat, to make sure that the change Zimbabwe deserves is realised at the next poll.”
