This rally comes ahead of the crucial 2013 election that will see President Robert Mugabe square-off against Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai for the third election time. The MDC-T’s preparedness for the big face-off has increasingly come under the spotlight.
“If you want the complete change its high time you push all your relatives back home and those in the diaspora to register to vote. We are tired of seeing scores of our scattered people suffering in foreign lands and this is your last chance to remove Zanu (PF), its leader Mugabe and his cronies. We are in the final phase of our struggle and I can assure you with all your relatives registered to vote, Zimbabwe will be returned to majority rule,” said Bennett to much applause from the crowd.
He spoke in Shona throughout and highlighted that he would only return home if Mugabe was removed from power.
“Zanu (PF) is full of hate. I can’t return home now as they always victimise me among other influential party cadres who were forced out of the country due to continued violence against us. I will only return when the ground is smooth for every falsely persecuted citizen,” he added.
MDC-T Midlands North MP Costin Muguti said party leader Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai was Zimbabwe’s only hope. “Let’s forget all other these ‘bogey’ parties out to rescue Zanu (PF) from its imminent defeat. Everyone knows that PM is the only man to take Mugabe out as he has fought for change for more than 10-years, so let’s finish what we started by registering to vote,” said Muguti.
The SA Provincial chairman, Kwanele Moyo, promised: “We will definitely provide buses to take people home to vote when the day comes. What’s important now is for you to register to vote.”
Mat South organising secretary, Phillemon ‘Njemnyama’ Moyo, said people must not give up as ‘we are approaching the finish line’.
Last year three opinion polls, released by Freedom House, Afrobarometer and Zimbabwe Vigil, mirrored a gloomy picture within the MDC-T camp.
As a result, many believe that the MDC-T is out of its depth in the race to dislodge Mugabe from power. This has caused concern among party supporters who continue to hold on to the “change” mantra that launched the party.
Political analyst Dumisani Nkomo warned recently that the MDC-T could not afford to rely on a wave of popularity alone and take things for granted. It had to deliver on its promises.
