A source stationed at Karoi police station said they were told to register before the May 20 deadline. “We have been notified that there will be a roll call and inspection
of those who managed to register before the deadline. If you fail, you will have to explain,’’ said a junior police officer
who declined to be named. A prison officer confirmed that they were being forced to register.
“We are all living in one ward that covers our police station. The reality, though, is
that most of us are lodgers in the high density suburb of Chikangwe that has six wards. It is unfair for us as they will be able to sniff out who voted against Zanu (PF) in the
 elections,’’ added the officer.
There have been reports of soldiers and police officers elsewhere being commanded to register, in what critics say is an attempt to sway votes in favour of Zanu (PF). There was no immediate police comment as their spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba, was said to be in meetings.
