Mutsvangwa, wife appear before Mphoko

DEFIANT War Veterans minister, Christopher Mutsvangwa, appeared before the Zanu PF National Disciplinary Committee (NDC) on Wednesday, rubbishing allegations leveled against him by the party’s Mashonaland West Province.

Sources close the development told NewZimbabwe.com that Mutsvangwa was “insolent and expressly stated that he was an innocent man”.

“Mutsvangwa told the NDC that he had no case to answer and he was innocent of all the allegations leveled against him.

“He further said the committee could go ahead and do whatever it wants because he was innocent. The matter was then deferred to next week,” said the source.

However, the war veterans’ leader denied this, insisting that he was very cooperative.

“I was never defiant. I simply denied the contrived charges,” he said.

“I told them the allegations where from a press article that centered on exchanges between PC (Political Commissar) Saviour Kasukuwere and me. He (Kasukuwere) admitted as such and moved case to be closed. All 5 members concurred,” Mutsvangwa said.

“Patrick Chinamasa objected as a lawyer saying Kasukuwere admissions were material and should now be basis of deliberations. So the matter was between me and the national commissar and not the President, First Lady and First Family.”

Mutsvangwa further said the committee, chaired by Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko, also dropped the treachery charges against him.

“They had initially charged me with treachery which they dropped because it has national implications,” he said.

Kasukuwere was unreachable for comment.

No confident vote

Zanu PF’s Mashonaland West Provincial Coordinating Committee last year in December passed a vote of no confidence against Mutsvangwa and recommended that he be expelled from the ruling party and also recalled from parliament.

The War Veterans Minister’s chief offence, among a litany of charges, was said to be that of insulting President Robert Mugabe and his wife Grace when he told a private weekly newspaper that:

“We will always respect the institution of marriage and he’s confused and conflating the institution of marriage and that of the State”.

Sources further said that Mutsvangwa’s wife also appeared before the disciplinary committee and demanded to be given a charge sheet before the hearing takes place.

“Monica Mutsvangwa was given the charge sheet and her matter will now be heard next week,” said the source.

Meanwhile, the disciplinary committee also upheld the 5 years’ suspension on former Women’s League secretary for administration, Esphenah Nhari.

Late last year, Monica was booted out of the Women’s League on allegations of insubordination when she openly threw her weight behind under-fire allies of Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Manicaland — apparently against the First Lady’s wishes.

This was after she (Monica) had, in an unusually bold move in late October, dismissed claims by the First Lady’s allies in the province that a meeting of the regional structure of the women’s league, which reversed the purported ouster from her position of provincial leader Happiness Nyakuedzwa, was null and void.

She was booted out together with Nhari who was shown the ‘exit door’ for saying ‘down with G40’ at Grace Mugabe rally in Masvingo.
