Confirmed the joint burial … Ignatius Chombo
Mwashita, 58, was once MP for Sunningdale in Harare. She died of diabetes at Parirenyatwa Hospital, in the capital on Friday.
Her death came on the same day with that of the late national heroine, Chitepo.
Zanu PF secretary for Administration Ignatius Chombo told mourners at the late politician’s Harare home that President Mugabe saw it fit to confer her with the highest honour of the land.
Chombo said Mwashita was a consistent Zanu PF member who remained committed to the ruling party for years.
For that, the minister said, President Mugabe saw it fit to reward her for the commitment.
“…So the President said she must be made a full heroine; she is a national heroine,†Chombo said.
Mwashita is going to be buried at the National Heroes Acre on Wednesday in an unprecedented situation which will see two national heroes interred during the same ceremony at the national shrine.
Mwashita’s death has however been overshadowed by that of the late wife to the late national hero Hebert Chitepo who was assassinated in Zambia 1975.
Mwashita joined the liberation struggle in 1975 and was deployed in Rushinga after her training. She operated there until the end of the war in 1979.
At independence, she joined the President’s Office and would later join mainstream politics when she became MP for Harare’s Sunningdale area and later a Senator.
