The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has warned Zimbabweans to prepare for scattered thunderstorms, strong winds, heavy localised downpours and possible hailstorms that are expected to affect large parts of the country over the next three days.

Heavy rain, destructive winds forecast across Zimbabwe

According to the advisory, issued jointly by the MSD and the Department of Civil Protection (DCP), the first round of storms is expected to affect Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands, Masvingo and Manicaland provinces from Saturday through Sunday.

On Monday, the thunderstorm activity is forecast to shift towards Harare Metropolitan, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West, Masvingo and parts of Manicaland.

The MSD said the storms could be accompanied by strong winds, hail and intense rainfall in some areas.

DCP warned that low-lying areas, urban centres and communities located near rivers could experience flash flooding if heavy downpours occur.

The weather alert also highlights the risk of lightning strikes, which can pose a danger to people, livestock and property.

Strong winds could damage roofs, uproot trees and destroy crops, while hailstorms may affect agricultural production in some areas.

Members of the public have been advised to seek shelter immediately when lightning occurs and to remain indoors until the storm passes.

People are also being encouraged to secure rooftops, remove loose items from around their homes and trim overhanging tree branches that could be brought down by strong winds.

Standing under trees, near power lines or next to tall metal structures during thunderstorms is strongly discouraged.

Motorists and travellers have also been advised to postpone unnecessary trips, particularly where severe weather conditions develop.

“From Sunday afternoon, 08 November 2026, scattered thunderstorms, accompanied by possible hail and localised heavy downpours, are expected across Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands, Masvingo and Manicaland Provinces,” reads part of the alert.

“On Monday, 09 November 2026, thunderstorm activity is expected to mainly affect Harare Metropolitan, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland Central, Masvingo and Manicaland Provinces.

“Daily updates will be provided through official media channels; residents are strongly urged to follow guidance issued by the Department of Civil Protection.”
