The commission took a month to release the results of the first round of the 2008 elections, by which time they had been effectively rigged in favour of then president Robert Mugabe – when in reality MDC President Morgan Tsvangirai had won.
“Even when they finally released the results, needless to say we did not have too much confidence in them – and the bloody run-off of June 2008 was the tragic result. I was determined to make sure that our lot need not be so dire this time around,” explained Gwata, who is a biochemist by training.
“In 2008, the results had already been displayed outside the polling stations. What was missing was a tool to collate all the results displayed outside polling stations into the required aggregate result. This time such a tool is available for free. I have distributed it as widely as possible myself and I hope many people will download it and pass it on,” said Gwata.
The tool he has designed is a robust Excel spreadsheet with error reduction features. All one has to do is capture the individual polling station results into the columns under the presidential candidates’ names and “hey presto the presidential election results appear instantly at the bottom of the spreadsheet” he said.
